Introduction to Thammasat University

　　Thammasat University, the second oldest university in Thailand, is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River at Tha Prachan in the historical center of Bangkok. This institution was established by the Thammasat University Act in 1933 and inaugurated in 1934 as an open university of higher education in Law and Politics. The university was then named, "Thammasat Lae Karn Muand", literally, "the University of Moral Science and Politics", and officially becoming Thammasat University in 1952. Thammasat ended its open university status in 1960 and has since required competitive entrance examinations.

　　泰国国立法政大学是泰国最为古老的大学之一，她位于湄南河畔的曼谷历史文化中心。她作为艺术大学始创于1933年，1934年时被批准成为法学与政治学方面的"开放大学"。1952年，正式成为泰国国立法政大学，并于1960年结束她的开放大学的历史，成为一个有严格入学要求并通过入学考试的正规大学。

　　In 1949 the university's academic structure differentiated into four distinct Faculties: Law, Political Science, Commerce & Accountancy, and Economics. The Faculty of Social Administration and the field of Journalism were in 1954. A year later the Institute of Public Administration, offering a postgraduate program, was established. This Institute was transferring to the National Institute of Development 　　　　　　Administration (NIDA) in 1966. Thammasat marked a milestone in university education in Thailand in 1962 by introducing liberal arts education with the founding of the Faculty of Liberal Arts.

　　1949年法政大学的教学结构主要分有四个系：法学系，政治系，商业及会计系和经济系。1954年增加了社会管理系和新闻系，一年之后，公共管理学院成立并提供研究生课程。1966年，公共管理学院并入泰国国家管理开发学院。泰国国立法政大学在1962年成立泰国第一个文科系引入文科教育成为泰国现代高等文科教育方面的奠基者。

　　The Department of Journalism, originally part of the Faculty of Social Administration, was upgraded to the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication in 1979. The Department of Sociology became the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology in 1984. A year later, a Language Institute was opened to promote English language training. The newest faculty is the faculty of Fine and Applied Arts.

　　国立法政大学新闻专业起源于社会管理系，1979年正式成为新闻与大众传媒系。社会与人类系在1984年成立，一年以后语言学院又开设了语言培训中心，最新的专业是应用艺术系。

　　The year 1986 brought several major changes including the establishment of the Rangsit campus for science-related programs. With this expansion Thammasat became a true comprehensive university. The Faculty of Science and Technology, newly established, was situated on this new campus site. Faculties to follow were the Faculty of Engineering in 1990; the Faculty of Medicine in 1991; the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT) in 1994; and three medical Faculties-Dentistry, Nursing of Allied Health Science-in 1995. In 1999 a new Faculty of Architecture was added offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

　　1986年，Rangsit校园正式启用，作为科学及相关学科的基地，国立法政大学成为真正意义上的综合性大学。新近成立的科技系就坐落于新校园内，1990年又接着成立了工程系，1991年成立了医学系，1994年成立了诗琳通国际理工学院，1995年成立了三个与医学相关的院系-牙科系，护理系及健康系。1999年，新成立的建筑系提供本科及研究生学位课程。

　　With the expansion of Social Administration programs in the cities of Lampang in Northern Thailand, Udonthani inthe Northeast and Narathiwat in the South, and the opening of a new College of Innovative Education training center in the southern city of Pattaya, Thammasat Continues its mission of offering higher education to serve the needs of Thai society. In its 67 years, Thammasat has evolved from an open university teaching Law and Politics to a prestigious institution with 21 Faculties, and six Institutes and seven Centers both with responsibilities mainly in research work. In the year 2001 there are 104 undergraduate and 82 graduate programs, including all international programs, in locations throughout Thailand.

　　泰国国立法政大学的教学宗旨是为泰国社会提供接受高等教育的机会。在过去的67年里，法政大学从教授法律与政治学的开放大学发展为享有盛誉的著名大学。目前已有21个系，6个学院，7个研究中心。包括国际课程在内，到2001年法政大学共有104个本科专业的课程和82个研究生学位的课程，教学遍布泰国各地。
