　　Few world-class universities have had a more auspicious beginning and promising future than the Asian University of Science and Technology, whose founding in December 1993, was finalized when Sir Ronald Oxburgh, Rector of Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, signed the memorandum of understanding in Bangkok, to provide academic support for the new university.

　　The nest two years, very busy ones for the Academic Advisory Board, chaired by Sir Edward Parkes, one of the United Kingdom's foremost academicians, saw the Asian University of Science and Technology take on what would be its final form. Land, 504 rai (200 acres), nestled in the foothills overlooking Pattaya Bay, a few kilometres east of Pattaya, was acquired and the well-known US architectural firm of Johnson, Fain and Pereira Associates, working with the Italian-Thai Development Corp, were able to finales the design concept and master plan.

　　The rapid growth experienced by Thailand and its neighbours had created a demand for professional educated graduates in the fields of engineering, applied science, business and management. Some of this demand had been met by sending Asian students abroad to study in the USA, Australia, United Kingdom and Canada. But the costs were unduly high; not only for school and living expenses but the very real threat of the students' loss of identity, culture and family values, was a major concern.

　　Many senior figures in industrial, commercial and government circles concluded the what was needed was a high quality private university in the English language medium, whose academic standards, validated by a world-class institution, would respond directly to the needs of the region. The Asian University of Science and Technology has set its sights on fulfilling this goal.
